Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay began to develop her creative and artistic side in her early years due to her aunt Denise. She was night nurses to afford her mother the space she required during the day for the love of art, literature, and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially aware and taught her how to make use of art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. Her father was awed by the historical Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summers and was later motivated to make a documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a young student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the home and looking through the garbage of one of members of juries. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from the college. From this position she started her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
